Flavors of berry liqueur, smoky sweet oak, toasted walnuts, and grenadine linger on the palate crafting quite an expressive wine.

Winemaker Notes
On the heels of the very cool and complex 2010 Syrah comes our 2011, which marries the tarry and meaty qualities of a warm vintage with the perfume of a cool one. What’s different about this beauty is that it contains a bit of an experimental lot where we co-fermented destemmed Syrah with whole cluster Muscat. In the Northern Rhone, the white grape Viognier is often added to Syrah as fruit, pressed out skins, or finished wine to bring extra aromatics and, oddly enough, darker color to the finished reds (the extra tannin from the white wine “fixes” the color of the Syrah to make it more stable). Muscat, like Viognier, has very tannic skins and is highly aromatic, so we figured, “What the heck, let’s give it a go!” As a component, that experiment produced one of the most compelling wines we’ve tasted in years, so we just had to add some to this year’s blend. Because it was co-fermented with Syrah, the floral character of the Muscat is a bit difficult to tease out, but it definitely adds an unusual fresh and exotic note to an otherwise ripe wine. Aromas of smoked meat, fat dripping onto hot coals, blackberry syrup, and, as a result of the co-fermented Muscat, ripe apricots emerge on the nose! Flavors of berry liqueur, smoky sweet oak, toasted walnuts, and grenadine linger on the palate crafting quite an expressive wine.

Production Notes
You may have heard how “disastrous” or “difficult” the 2011 vintage was in the Napa Valley. Whenever you hear that the Valley has suffered a cold or damp vintage, look to the mountains for exceptional wines. What we have going for us up here at Kuleto Estate is plenty of sunshine even in the coolest vintage, little fog in the foggiest vintage, and quick-drying soils and constant breezes in the wettest vintage. We actually prize the “challenging” vintages because of the expressive wines that they produce.
