Tasting Notes
Our 2010 Zin brings to mind Italian Amarone – big, flavorful, and alcoholic but somehow light on its feet.
Winemaker Notes
Both the cool vintage and fermentation temperature are apparent in the finished 2010 wine. It has the hallmark ‘big fruit’ and ‘peppery’ aromas of Zin but is made more complex with a brooding, dark wood aroma reminiscent of polished mahogany. Though quite alcoholic, it is balanced by its incredible acidity that keeps it from feeling hot and allows it to fill the mid-palate. Our Zinfandel often reminds me of wines made elsewhere in the world - sometimes Rioja from Spain, sometimes Grenache from the South of France.

Production Notes
For winemaker Dave Lattin, there is a mutual understanding that all but a small percentage of the winemaker’s work is done in the vineyard. Keeping the vineyard’s serpentine twists and exposures in mind, the best-suited varietals for each block have been selected. Working with the land, not against it, the individually terraced lots are not oriented to one central direction, but instead are planted to maximize the benefits of their natural location. Kuleto Estate employs a non-traditional approach to its Zinfandel winemaking. Rather than running fermentation temperatures up to 90+ degrees, cool fermentation is used to extract only from the freshest of berries. Press wine is rarely included – again to avoid picking up anything other than pure, ripe fruit flavors. Once the wine is drained from tank, it is aged in 132 gallon (rather than 59 gallon) barrels to keep oxidation to a minimum and to lessen the flavor impact of the barrel on the wine.
Vineyard Notes
Vintage 2010 was the coolest one since 1999 at the estate. Fortunately for us, Kuleto Estate has plenty of sunshine at its varying degrees of high altitude from sunup to sundown. This allows for fully ripened fruit in the most challenging of vintages and produces highly expressive wines every year.
