Rich, seamless and mouthcoating, without the accompanying heat or heaviness displayed by wines of this stature.

Winemaker Notes
The extra hangtime enjoyed by the 2005 Syrah has resulted in a wine that offers both power and finesse. The complex aromatics bring together the classic dark Syrah smells of wild blueberries and smoked meat, matching their intensity with higher-toned aromas of candied violets and crushed stone. On the palate, it is rich, seamless and mouthcoating, without the accompanying heat or heaviness sometimes displayed be wines of this stature. Benefiting from extra months in barrel, this Syrah has a very integrated structure. Though already quite alluring, the 2005 Syrah is just beginning to show its stuff. So pop a bottle to get a feel for it, then cellar the rest for several years…if you can man.

Production Notes
The three clones of Syrah cultivated at Kuleto Estate grow at 1,400 feet on top of a ridge with thin, shaly “soil.” Syrah can grow like a weed and set huge crops in some sites, but on our windy ridge, the vines are slow to grow, small in stature, and produce moderate yields with little intervention. Because of our extreme site, we are greatly affected by weather that may influence yields and ripening time, and we often see wide swings in total yields from year to year. Even so, our multiple blocks of Syrah consistently deliver fruit with tremendous varietal character and great complexity.

In 2005, the Syrah was harvested a full month later than in 2004, partly due to cool harvest weather, and partly due to the relatively “normal” size of the crop (2004 produced half the yields of 2005). Four separate lots were destemmed to a combination of 2.5 and 3.5-ton open-top tanks, two of which contained 25 percent whole clusters to help tame a “smoky” clone of Syrah, while providing some spicy character. After 11, 12, 18 and 20 days respectively, the tanks were drained and pressed to French oak barrels. These barrels were racked and blended twice during 20 months of barrel aging.
Vineyard Notes
Our Syrah vineyards are planted at 1400’ above sea level adjacent to Pritchard Hill and Howell Mountain, off Sage Canyon Road 6.5 miles east of the Silverado Trail, above Lake Hennessey and the town of Rutherford.
