| Winemaker Notes: | The Cabernet Sauvignons from our Vineyard Block Series take their names and are sourced from prized vineyard blocks and areas of our property. They showcase the myriad flavors and structures expressed by this single varietal at our mountain estate. Colors range from vibrant, glowing red to almost opaque purple, aromas from red peppercorn, flowers, and sweet dried herbs to black plum, black licorice, tar, and smoked meat, and structures from clean, bright, and focused to heavy, soft, and sweet. The 2008 growing season was marked by the devastating spring frosts that ‘thinned’ the potential crop for the year. We lost close to 25 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon alone. The vineyard blocks that survived produced tiny crops of tiny grapes that made incredibly intense wines. The 2008 Villa Vista is one of my favorite wines ever from the estate because the tensions typical to the Villa Vista blend between red and black fruits and fruit and spice are magnified by the small crop. The aroma is almost liqueur-like in the volume of aromatics and the mouth is creamy, very concentrated, extremely spicy, and long. Its inspiration comes more from Brunello than from California Cabernet. -Dave Lattin, Winemaker |
