| Tasting Notes: | The 2007 Syrah is a dense, black-purple color. Due to the earlier harvest, the warm climate characteristics of Syrah are most prominent. Ripe berry, coffee, tar, and sweet herbs climb out of the glass on first pour. The mouth is explosive with similar flavors and the structure pushes to all corners of the palate. It’s a hedonistic wine, but like the 2004 and the 2006, the flavors are consistent with the structure, and all attributes are in balance. |
| Vineyard Notes: | At Kuleto Estate, four clones of Syrah grow in eight blocks at an average of 1300 feet. Syrah can grow like a weed and set huge crops on some sites, but on our thin-soiled and windy ridges, the vines are slow to grow, small in stature, and produce moderate yields with little intervention. Because of our extreme location, we are greatly affected by weather that influences yields and ripening, and we can expect wide swings in tonnage and harvest dates from year to year. What is delivered from our blocks of Syrah consistently is fruit with tremendous and diverse varietal character. |
| Winemaker Notes: | In 2007, the growing season was nearly ideal, and though harvest began relatively early, it progressed slowly and without the typical heat-spikes that can force the winemaker’s hand to pick sooner than desired. The resulting wines are deeply colored, strongly varietal, and big in stature and flavor. The 2007 Syrah was fermented in both small open-top and larger (5 ton) closed-top fermenters. Macerations lasted between 15 and 23 days using a combination of native and cultured yeast strains. One tank contained whole cluster Syrah and a dash of Sangiovese to add spice and length to the final blend. After draining and pressing, the wine remained in barrels 19 months with only one racking before in was bottled in June of 2009. |
